Robert Popovic

Over a 17-year career spanning law enforcement, government regulation, and corporate investigations, Robert has led specialist teams in investigating complex money laundering, fraud, and financial crime matters, as well as sensitive child protection cases.

Biography

Robert’s career spans specialist crime roles, regulatory enforcement and corporate investigations. Within the NSW Police Force, he served as a senior Detective in specialist squads, including the Child Abuse Squad (CAS) and a dedicated Financial Crimes/Organised Crime squad. In these roles, he managed and led teams of detectives responsible for significant, end-to-end investigations into complex and protracted criminal matters, including money laundering, fraud and broader financial crime offending, as well as sensitive child abuse and child exploitation investigations within the NSW Police CAS.

These investigations required strong operational oversight, strategic planning and a high level of forensic and analytical capability. Robert routinely coordinated multi-disciplinary teams, managed covert and overt investigative strategies, and navigated intersecting state and Commonwealth legislation. He worked closely with a wide range of stakeholders, including state and territory health bodies, financial institutions, educational institutions across all levels of the education system, child protection agencies, regulators and other law enforcement bodies, ensuring information was shared appropriately and risks were effectively managed. His performance in this environment earned him formal recognition, including commendations from specialist commands and a nomination for the Rotary Club Police Officer of the Year Award.

Building on his policing experience, Robert transitioned into regulatory investigations with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). As an Investigation Officer, he conducted complex investigations into organisational compliance with Primary Safety Duty and Chain of Responsibility obligations under the Heavy Vehicle National Law. His work involved site inspections, system and process reviews, WHS-focused advisory engagements, and detailed analysis of policies, procedures, and Safety Management Systems to identify systemic issues, root causes, and opportunities for improvement. Robert also performed the roles of Senior Investigator and Manager of Investigations, providing leadership, coaching, and mentoring to other investigators, and contributing to the development of operational policies, procedures, and investigation frameworks. Robert has also delivered corporate investigations for a range of organisations, focusing on incidents, conduct issues and risk-related matters in workplace and organisational settings.
